Responding to the launch of the Government’s consultation into zero-hours contracts, Patrick Milnes, Head of People and Work Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce said:
“Employment legislation must be proportionate, affordable and workable for both businesses and their employees.
“The proposed right to guaranteed hours for people on zero-hours or low-hours contracts is a major concern for the businesses we represent, especially in sectors such as retail and hospitality.
“Flexibility is essential. The government cannot adopt a one-size fits all approach on this issue.
“In the coming weeks, we will engage with the consultation and press for a balanced approach that protects the demand for flexible working. These contracts are often a vital stepping stone into employment for those further from the labour market.
“The consultation must give businesses the chance to be heard. If the economy is to grow, firms need the flexibility to respond to challenges and seize opportunities.”
