Responding to the publication of the Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery Plan by the Government today, Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce said:
“Businesses are determined to continue playing a crucial role in the UK’s net zero journey.
“But right now, many firms are facing significant barriers to decarbonisation. Our latest research shows 66% of firms citing high cost as a significant or moderate barrier to making progress on net zero.
“Businesses widely welcome plans for more support on electrification announced today, and the promise of clearer financial incentives for decarbonisation.
“Progress on net zero will also provide a pathway for cheaper energy, as businesses continue to struggle paying their bills. BCC research, last Autumn, showed over a third of firms expected it to be difficult to pay their energy bills.
“Ahead of the Budget, businesses are looking for the Government to provide further support on energy bills.
“A targeted discount scheme to incentivise business towards electrification would both support net zero and cut bills. However, any scheme must be properly funded and bring benefits to firms of all sizes.”
