Business Council President Wins International Award

Mark Surgenor, President of the Council for Business with Britain in Sri Lanka, has been named the winner of the British Chambers of Commerce International President’s Award 2026.

The Chamber Awards are a highlight of the business calendar, celebrating the people and organisations that strengthen the Chamber Network and help companies grow and prosper. This year’s awards have been organised with support by Quest. It provides outsourced HR, health and safety, employment law and business compliance support to organisations across the UK.

Mark was recognised for modernising the Council during his two-year presidency and strengthening business links between the UK and Sri Lanka. He repositioned it from a traditional networking organisation into a high-value platform for commercial insight, access and practical connections.

His tenure included 19 forums and events between August 2024 and June 2026, engagement with more than 200 member organisations, and the creation of CBB NextGen, a structured route for younger entrepreneurs and professionals to contribute to the Council.

He also strengthened partnerships with the British High Commission, the UK Department for Business and Trade, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and peer councils.

On receiving his award, Mark said:

“I’m honoured to receive the President’s Award and hugely grateful to everyone across the Council who has contributed to what we’ve achieved. Together we’ve worked to strengthen UK-Sri Lanka business links, bringing the next generation into our work and ensuring the Council offers real value to its members.”

Andy Haldane CBE, President of the British Chambers of Commerce said:

Mark’s leadership shows the difference one individual can make to an entire business community. He has modernised the Council and created stronger practical connections between firms in the UK and Sri Lanka. This award is thoroughly deserved recognition of his energy, integrity and lasting contribution to the global Chamber Network.

Des Shaw, CEO of Quest, said:

“Quest is proud to support an award that celebrates outstanding leadership across the international Chamber Network. Mark has combined strategic vision with practical delivery, creating lasting value for members and ensuring the Council is well placed for the future. We warmly congratulate him on his achievements.”
