The Summer Berry Company

The Summer Berry Company (TSBC) recognised that the seasonal availability of strawberries in the UK, traditionally limited from April to October, put restrictions on consumer access to fresh British produce and increased reliance on imports.
This dependency raised concerns about fruit quality and the environmental impact of long-distance transportation of produce. In response to this problem, TSBC introduced an industry-first Green Energy Solution (GES), enabling the sustainable, year-round production of high-quality British strawberries.
By investing in advanced glasshouse technology, TSBC has transformed the British berry market. These high-tech growing environments provide precise control over nutrients, water, temperature, humidity, CO2, and light, creating optimal conditions for strawberry production even in the colder months. As a result, TSBC now produces over 600,000 punnets of strawberries throughout the winter, significantly reducing the need for imports and providing consumers with fresher, more sustainable options.
The introduction of the GES has led to far greater financial sustainability. By optimising heating and lighting systems, TSBC ensures efficient, high-yield production that meets the increasing consumer demand and conserves resources.
As the first company to successfully produce strawberries year-round on this scale, TSBC has reinforced its position as a market leader- a feat recognised by The Sunday Times who wrote a full page feature on the solution. Strong partnerships with major UK retailers have been strengthened by the ability to offer a consistent, reliable supply of premium British strawberries. Retailers benefit from reduced supply chain disruptions and improved product quality, while TSBC’s ongoing investment in renewable energy, including solar and wind power, further supports its sustainability goals.
Beyond sustainability, TSBC’s efforts have had a significant economic impact. By reducing dependence on imported fruit, the company is helping to boost the UK agricultural sector while supporting local job creation. As the GES has made year-round production possible, many jobs for managers and growers, including a T-level student and roles in husbandry and harvest within TSBC’s greenhouses are a direct result of the GES and the increased number of job opportunities it has created.
By embracing innovation and sustainability, TSBC has created a model that addresses key concerns of both retailers and consumers which delivers high-quality and consistent produce. Through these achievement, TSBC has revolutionised the industry, strengthened its market position, and set a new standard for food production, making it a deserving nominee.
In addition to transforming the market, TSBC is also using its year-round strawberry production to support communities in need. With the GES enabling year-round production for the first time, TSBC has been able to maintain a steady supply of berry donations without interruptions as a result of seasonality. The company has long-standing partnerships with UK-based food charities, including UK Harvest and The Big Difference, donating over 18,750 punnets of fresh strawberries in 2024 alone. In this way, TSBC has created a sustainable model that solves problems both for its community and the agricultural industry

Company Growth
On the back of the success of the brewery site and events, Dal then set his sights on expanding both the range of products on offer and the footprint of the business. In December 2021, Dal agreed a 20-year lease on Christchurch Spire in Coventry city centre. The unique venue serves Dhillon’s beers and ales on tap, as well as offering hot drinks and food, to create a family friendly environment.
Dhillon’s next venture was the Sky Blue Tavern, a brand-new sports bar in the city centre, in partnership with Coventry City Football Club. The Tavern is a hub for Sky Blues fans to meet and enjoy a drink, whether on matchdays or non-matchdays, and helps to generate revenue and support for the club. As one of the only dedicated sports bars in Coventry, football and sports fans can watch the latest action on big screens and in individual booths.
Dhillon’s Brewery have now also secured several catering contracts, including with Historic Coventry Trust, where they provide food and beverage operations at the historic Drapers’ Hall, as well as at other Trust locations.
The company’s vision and long-term growth plan continues to be focused on its close association with Coventry whilst securing further locations and contracts, to build a sustainable, profitable business model whilst continuing Dal’s original passion for brewing beautifully crafted beer.
