Doncaster Chamber of Commerce
Doncaster Chamber has played a defining leadership role in one of the most significant regeneration projects in the North of England: the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA). When the airport closed in 2022, South Yorkshire lost its primary gateway to international connectivity, threatening inward investment, skills development, business confidence and long-term economic growth. For many, the loss felt permanent. For Doncaster Chamber, it became a mission.
Within days of the closure announcement, the Chamber convened a landmark public meeting of more than 300 stakeholders—businesses, MPs, community groups, Doncaster Council, and the South Yorkshire Mayor. That gathering ignited a cross-sector campaign unlike anything the region had seen. At the same time, we opened direct communication with the airport’s owners, Peel, and joined intensive negotiation meetings between them and our public-sector partners, ensuring a clear and consistent business voice was heard at every stage.
As momentum grew, the Chamber leveraged its strong political relationships to escalate the issue to Westminster. Work with local MPs, including Ed Miliband MP and John Healey MP, enabled us to secure a roundtable with the Chancellor early in 2025, where Chamber members clearly articulated the urgent need for the airport to reopen. Just six weeks later, the Prime Minister visited DSA, announced £30 million of government support, and received a detailed briefing from our CEO about the further interventions required to ensure long-term success in trade, inward investment, and inbound tourism. High-profile media activity throughout this period helped frame DSA’s future as both a regional necessity and a nationally significant opportunity.
A campaign of this scale required unprecedented collaboration. Doncaster Chamber led the charge across South Yorkshire, working closely with Barnsley & Rotherham and Sheffield Chambers to unify the business voice across the region, significantly enhancing our legitimacy and influence. At critical moments, more than 15 northern Chambers jointly signed lobbying letters to Secretaries of State and Ministers calling for government support. The British Chambers of Commerce became a key partner, with Director General Shevaun Haviland visiting the airport site and publicly endorsing our case. Other organisations, including the FSB and Make UK, also joined the campaign, helping us amplify messages and reach thousands of businesses.
This effort was instrumental in Doncaster Council securing a 125-year lease for the airport from Peel—an essential milestone that has given investors and operators the certainty they need. As a direct result, DSA is now set to reopen in 2027, generating an estimated £2 billion in economic impact and 5,500 direct jobs over 30 years.
Throughout the campaign, the Chamber stayed focused on delivering practical benefits for members. Using our Local Skills Improvement Plan, we researched and articulated the skills needs of the aviation and logistics sectors, prompting local providers to begin collaborating on an aviation skills centre of excellence. We strengthened the region’s reputation as a serious investment location and opened up new opportunities for local firms within the aviation supply chain.
The campaign also significantly strengthened the Chamber’s commercial position. DSA, 2Excel Aviation and Hybrid Air Vehicles have all joined as patrons, creating new, sustainable revenue streams. Redline Aviation Security and several other aviation-aligned businesses have joined as members, contributing to the development of a regional aviation cluster. Peel has rejoined as a Gold member, and even the #SaveDSA campaign organiser has returned to membership and now works with us. These renewed relationships reflect a clear confidence in the Chamber’s capability, influence and impact.
The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport stands as a powerful example of modern, mission-driven Chamber leadership: commercially sharp, politically influential, regionally unifying and relentlessly focused on long-term economic prosperity. Doncaster Chamber has demonstrated that Chambers can be national change-makers—driving investment, challenging and uniting stakeholders, commercialising opportunity and delivering legacy projects that will benefit the region for generations.
