Advancing 15 years of circular workspaces through Crown’s Circular Economy Framework

Building on over 15 years of circular workplace solutions, Crown’s Circular Economy Framework provides a consistent approach to embedding circularity through reducing waste and extending product life across our UKI operations and services.

Commit

At Crown Workspace, we have long understood our responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and services. Over the years, we have successfully embedded circular initiatives across our business, providing market-leading sustainable furniture and IT clearance services that enable the resale, donation, refurbishment and redistribution of tens of thousands of workplace assets each year. However, we recognise that the transition to a circular economy is not something we can achieve alone. Collaboration is key to creating lasting change; this being a focal point of the Circularity in Practice Pledge, signing the pledge felt like the natural next step in our journey.

We signed the pledge in April 2026, aligning with the launch of our Crown UKI Circular Economy Framework earlier this year. Becoming a signatory of the pledge strengthens the commitments outlined within our framework and reinforces our ambition to us minimise resource use, extend product life, maximise recycling, and continue driving positive change across our sector.

Plan

Circularity is a defining element of Crown UKI’s Three Pillar Responsible Business Strategy and has been embedded within our operations for many years. To accelerate our progress and ensure a more consistent approach across our brands, we launched our Circular Economy Framework in 2026.

The framework builds upon our existing initiatives and complements our Carbon Reduction Plan. For alignment with internationally recognised best practice and to support our transition, the framework is aligned with BS ISO 59000 standards.

Delivered through an action plan managed by our UKI Sustainability Team and supported by our Carbon Reduction Team, the framework initially focuses on waste and packaging – two areas where we can achieve the most immediate, measurable impact. Our short-term goals include achieving best practice for all waste management alongside identifying metrics and optimising data monitoring. To achieve these, we are in the process of identifying areas for improvement.

To guide implementation, we have established five core aims designed to embed circularity into all decision-making, encourage more circular behaviours and support sustainable growth and long-term resilience:

1) Minimise resource consumption
2) Extend product life
3) Adopt circular sourcing
4) Maximise recycling
5) Lead our sector

Partner

The success of our framework requires collaboration across our value chain. We work with industry bodies including BITC, IWFM, and BAR, as well as suppliers, clients and reuse partners, to share best practice and identify opportunities to improve circular outcomes.

To support the delivery of our plan, we are actively working with our packaging supplier to better understand existing initiatives, improve material efficiency and reduce waste. We have also engaged with external partners for the reuse and repurposing of our clients’ materials such as carpet tiles, and textiles offcuts from our Renew Centre, and continue to explore more routes to embed such solutions into our interiors division.

Initially, the framework has been communicated through internal presentations and business-wide communications. Our Carbon Reduction Team plays a key role in implementation, while future discovery sessions will help our staff identify opportunities to embed circular thinking into their day-to-day roles. While our UKI Sustainability Team runs Carbon Impact training for all staff, we are developing training specifically aimed at educating our staff on the circular economy.

Act

The implementation of our framework is captured in an 18-month plan and builds from our existing projects and developments.

For us, reuse has always been and continues to be a priority. Through our Circulate principles, we focus on extending product life, reducing waste and retaining value in materials and assets wherever possible. Our circular economy framework strengthens our Circulate principles, providing structure and direction to our commitment for long-term organisational change.

Our 6 Circulate principles guide our operations:

1 – Reevaluate
2 – Renew
3 – Resell and Rebuy
4 – Redistribute
5 – Recycle
6 – Reporting

Our framework builds on our existing initiatives and will be used to identify opportunities for refinement. Where our clients’ furniture require renewal rather than replacement, we offer refurbishment services through our Renew Centre.

Also, our Office Resale platform provides a route for quality used furniture to be resold and remain in use. Where assets cannot be resold, we redistribute redundant furniture and equipment assets through the Giving Back Project to our network of over 900 charities, schools and community organisations. In 2025 alone, we donated 3000 items to over 50 organisations, creating meaningful social value whilst keeping resources in use for longer. Delivering social value as part of our approach to circularity is a core lens we apply to the work we do, as we recognise the integral link between environmental and social impact.

To optimise the impact of our initiatives, the framework is being used to empower our staff to confidently champion our circular solutions and support clients in making more sustainable choices.

Share

To remain leaders in circularity, we actively share our knowledge, insights, and experience to inspire change across our sector.

We regularly showcase circularity in action through open days and tours of our Renew Centre, particularly during Circular Economy Week. Since 2015, the Renew Centre has refurbished 270,000 items, showcasing the impact of circularity at scale.

We also support informed decision-making by providing clients with data on the environmental and social benefits of circular solutions, including the carbon savings achieved through reuse, refurbishment and donation in post-project reports.

Beyond our own operations, we have published white papers on driving circularity into the workplace as well as contributing to wider industry research. We also contribute speakers and content to industry events and webinars, share expertise and thought leadership through publications, and are innovating with partners to develop systems that help organisations better understand the value of refurbished and reused furniture.
