S&W Wholesale – People and Work Business of the Year

CASE STUDIES

S&W Wholesale

At S&W, people are not just employees, they are owners, and are at the heart of everything it does, and not just in theory. In 2023, S&W became the first large business in Ireland to move to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), giving everyone a real stake in its success and shaping a culture of pride, accountability, and shared reward.

It has built a people strategy that focuses on growing and keeping great talent. That includes structured career paths, cross-department development, and investing in leadership at all levels, from management and leadership development to practical training and support for supervisors. They are also about to launch a professional driver development programme to help operatives build long-term careers in logistics. These initiatives will boost retention, engagement, and reduce the need for external hires while also addressing key skills shortages in its sector.

Fairness, inclusion and support are a key part of life at S&W. From anonymous suggestion boxes and ‘Ask the CEO’ to regular skip-level meetings, people have real input. Its first employee survey had a brilliant response rate, with 88% saying they understood the company goals and 83% feeling connected to its future; a strong foundation to build on.

S&W has introduced meaningful benefits like enhanced life assurance, extra leave, long service recognition, and twice-yearly tax free EOT bonuses. Wellbeing is a core focus too, with a health cash plan, health checks, EAP support, and hybrid working options where possible. It also runs regular wellbeing and appreciation events, from walking challenges to all employee lunches, led by the Culture & Wellbeing team.

Inclusion goes beyond words. When a colleague was diagnosed with a debilitating long-term condition, S&W offered support to the charity and will continue to raise awareness. It reinforces its belief that true inclusion is about supporting people in the way that’s right for them.

S&W is proud of the impact it has in the community. Through ‘Nearby Local Legends’, it celebrates unsung heroes doing great things locally. In 2024, the company raised over £25,000 for local charities and will continue to invest in the community. It’s built strong partnerships with schools and colleges, running workshops, mock interviews, and offering work experience. All part of a commitment to growing local talent and giving young people a real window into the world of work.

And the impact on business performance? It’s clear. Since adopting this approach, sales have grown by over 49% from £95m in 2018 to £142m in FY24. ROI export sales more than doubled, and EBITDA has increased from £3.6m to £6.7m. Operationally, S&W has scaled up chilled and frozen capacity and increased overall volume throughput. These results are driven by an engaged, motivated workforce and a culture where everyone is invested in our collective success.

At S&W, this isn’t a one-off campaign, it’s how they do business, building a successful, growing company where people feel valued, included, and supported to thrive

Company Growth

On the back of the success of the brewery site and events, Dal then set his sights on expanding both the range of products on offer and the footprint of the business. In December 2021, Dal agreed a 20-year lease on Christchurch Spire in Coventry city centre. The unique venue serves Dhillon’s beers and ales on tap, as well as offering hot drinks and food, to create a family friendly environment.

Dhillon’s next venture was the Sky Blue Tavern, a brand-new sports bar in the city centre, in partnership with Coventry City Football Club. The Tavern is a hub for Sky Blues fans to meet and enjoy a drink, whether on matchdays or non-matchdays, and helps to generate revenue and support for the club. As one of the only dedicated sports bars in Coventry, football and sports fans can watch the latest action on big screens and in individual booths.

Dhillon’s Brewery have now also secured several catering contracts, including with Historic Coventry Trust, where they provide food and beverage operations at the historic Drapers’ Hall, as well as at other Trust locations.

The company’s vision and long-term growth plan continues to be focused on its close association with Coventry whilst securing further locations and contracts, to build a sustainable, profitable business model whilst continuing Dal’s original passion for brewing beautifully crafted beer.
