Clifford Chance: Legal expertise at the service of the environment
As founding members of the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance, Clifford Chance makes the commitment to accelerate their transition to net zero carbon by 2050.
Two sides to being responsible
As one of the world's most distinguished law firms, the firm strives to exceed client expectations and contribute to a more sustainable world.
“There are two sides to being a responsible business: one is doing business responsibly ourselves; the other is rising to the responsibility as a global business to play our part in driving positive change.” - Jeroen Ouwehand, Global Senior Partner
Clifford Chance pledged to step up to this responsibility and bring their skills and expertise together to build a more inclusive, sustainable future.
Climate stability is an important issue for many of their clients. The company is in the regular practice of advising clients on environmental matters. Choosing also to support their own people in undertaking pro bono work that helps strengthen their capabilities in this area of law.
Following the science
In early 2021 Clifford Chance extended their partnership with sustainability data and consulting firm Carbon Intelligence. Developing science-based targets for submission to the SBTi for approval.
“Science-based targets enable us to better understand our carbon emissions and help us build a decarbonisation pathway and roadmap to net zero.”
By submitting this data for review, the firm can be certain in taking a realistic, science-based approach.
Clifford Chance hopes to move to the implementation phase this year and join thousands of businesses around the world in demonstrating their commitment to mitigating the effects of climate change.
Greening the supply chain
An important part of the journey is understanding that the company does not operate in isolation. Clifford Chance works closely with their suppliers to help reduce their environmental and social impacts. Monitoring environmental factors has been a big part of this process.
