O’Brien Contractors is a family run construction business that was established in 1958 by Peter O’Brien’s Father. The business was hit by hard times during the recent down turn but the determination of Peter and his team saw him lead a diversification process that made 2013 their best year to date!
Members of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, O’Briens entered the Chamber Awards as they felt they had a really positive story to tell, not only about their Company but the people they employ, their involvement with the local community and the training that they offer within the construction sector. They had never entered the Chamber Awards before, but they wanted to showcase their achievements and thought entering was a good place to start.
Winning an Award
Peter was blown away when they won not one but two Chamber Awards at the Brewery in November of last year, but he is very clear about what winning a Chamber Award has done for their business, he said: “To win the Business of the Year award from the British Chambers of Commerce is a real privilege and a wonderful endorsement of how hard everyone at O’Briens has worked to achieve our goals, to be recognised for this has given everyone a great boost.”
Entering the Chamber Awards
O’Briens would encourage others to enter the Chamber Awards, the entry process was straightforward, with a good balance of questions that made sense and were easy to understand. Rebecca Gozdecki, Marketing Manager at O’Brien Contractors offered the following tips when it came to compiling a winning entry form: “Research your company as if you don’t know anything about it. Speak to your team and customers and ask them what they think makes your organisation different, it’s not always what you think.”
Life after the Awards
O’Briens plan to invest a large proportion of their £25,000 cash prize in the companies apprenticeship scheme, they have already employed three new apprentices, with the rest being spent on local charity work, Peter said: “We are all dedicated to delivering the best service to our customers while also striving to improve the efficiency and environmental impact of construction projects. It’s also very important to us that we provide the opportunities for our staff to realise their potential and that we make a positive impact on the communities we work in.”
