Number of NEETs remains extremely worrying for business

19/06/08 | 12:09

Responding to the 2007 statistics on participation in education, employment and training by 16-18 year olds released today, David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

“Whilst the overall increase in participation is good news, it remains extremely worrying that despite over half a million vacancies in our economy, there are still so many young British people not in employment, education or training.

"The Government is failing our youth by not providing them with the essential skills and attitude required to become productive members of society, as well as British business, who struggle to find a suitably skilled and engaged workforce.

“Whilst welfare reform and raising the compulsory participation age to 18 will go some way to improving this situation, the education sector in general requires stability and a reduction in bureaucracy if the needs of the economy are ever to be reached."
