Government should abandon Workplace Parking Levy
29/09/08 | 11:59
Commenting on reports that John Healey, the Local Government minister, will attend a conference this week to consider using the Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) as a means of raising extra revenue for local councils, David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:
“We are extremely concerned about the temptation to extend the use of what is essentially a stealth tax on business. Companies are already paying a number of other levies and charges, with more in the pipeline.
“As is clear in Nottingham, the WPL is purely a means to generate more funds for the council at the expense of local companies and their ability to compete.
“The Government must recognise the financial burden businesses are already under and they should rule out any possibility of the damaging scheme being unveiled elsewhere.”
