Large firms to help SMEs punch above their weight

A major new initiative is being launched across the UK, which will give thousands of small and medium-sized businesses the chance to learn from some of the country’s biggest and most successful companies.
Business Growth Clubs have been developed by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and are designed to get SMEs growing despite the difficult economic environment. The aim is to bring together like-minded businessmen and women and give them direct access to real and practical support from industry professionals such as BT, RBS and NatWest, Dell, Design Council and PTI Worldwide.
The series of informal, hands-on workshops run from October 2009, and will cover a range of topics from: banking and motivating your team, to successfully selling your products and making the most of information technology.
Managing Director of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), John Dunsmure, said:
"SMEs are operating in a fiercely competitive market and difficult economic conditions. It’s easy for them to become frustrated or bogged down in the day-to-day pressures. However, the current backdrop means it is even more important for businesses to stay focused, innovate and develop new skills to ensure they are fit for the future.
“That is what these Business Growth Clubs are all about. The fact that people will be able to learn from likeminded businessmen and women and some of the biggest hitters in industry will mean they stay ahead of the game and move up to the next level.”
