1st of April will see one of the most important conferences of the year. The BCC Annual Conference will the showpiece of one of the great successes in the British economy – the spectacular growth in the number of new SMEs (over half a million last year), the growth in employment and the growth in investment.

This is all the more remarkable given the lack of business experience in our politicians, civil servants and a somewhat cynical media as well as a hobbled banking system.

Basically the SMEs are succeeding despite them!

Just think what could happen if they all had the support they needed.

Yes the politicians are learning as we have seen in the Budget, albeit slowly, yes the banks are being repaired and even the news flow is getting more positive and constructive.

However there are still many areas that we have to press to change and develop. From the new funding structures of crowdfunding and peer to peer lending, to pressing for some clear strategy on power production and usage as well as an effective transport strategy.

This is going to be a great day.
