Top traits for ‘Super SMEs’ unveiled

26/07/10 | 11:51

Good communication skills and maintaining new innovations are the key characteristics which make businesses and their founders ‘Super SMEs’, a new study has revealed.

As part of its Entreprenation campaign, Orange analysed companies included in the Fast Track 100 and Tech Track 100, to unveil the significant qualities for success. As well as communication skills and keeping up with new innovations, the survey found other important traits, including being well connected, having a powerful online presence and remaining environmentally aware.

Martin Lyne, director of small and medium business at Orange, said: “To be one of the best innovators in the UK, the Entreprenation report has told us that a strong sense of passion for their business, and an ability to communicate this to others, is equally key to making a business successful.

“A desire to keep abreast of the latest innovations and technologies has given budding entrepreneurs access to new tools to help run their business. Presence on social networking sites for example now provide start-ups with access to new contacts, new ways of thinking and new customers, which formally would have been difficult to attain.”

The research also revealed that while London still dominates as a hot spot of entrepreneurial activity with 39% of companies based there, the South West with cities such as Bristol and Bath, is also a popular destination for small businesses, with 13% now run out of the region.
