Recession redefines business leadership

21/07/10 | 12:03

Financial prudence and emotional intelligence are the most significant qualities of effective business leadership, new research has revealed.

The survey of over 5000 British bosses and employees found that 73% of workers view sound financial decision making as one of the most defining qualities of successful leadership.

In six out of 10 cases, bosses who had demonstrated sound financial judgement since the onset of the downturn were viewed by employees as being the more effective leaders.  Meanwhile, over half of bosses admitted they had actively softened their leadership stance in order to be seen as part of the team.

The study was carried out as part of a joint project by Orange and Exeter University’s Centre for Leadership Studies, to help inform the search for the finalists of the 2010 Orange Leader of the Year Award.  This is part of the National Business Awards, which recognises outstanding leadership in business.

Martin Stiven, vice president of business at Orange, said: “The recession has reshaped how we define great leaders and the traits that are now considered as vital ingredients for success both in and outside the board room.”

The survey also revealed that Nick Clegg was the political party leader most emulated by business bosses for his open and honest approach.
