BCC AND RBS GROUP ANNOUNCE TYRRELLS POTATO CHIPS AS OVERALL WINNER OF THE NATIONAL CHAMBERS AWARDS 2007 AND £50,000 PRIZE FUND

30/11/07 | 11:10

Steve Pateman, Chief Executive for RBS Group UK Business Banking said: “RBS Group works with thousands of successful businesses across the UK and as sponsors are proud to celebrate the best in British enterprise. The quality of the entries this year was extremely high but Tyrrells stood out by demonstrating all the attributes of successful enterprise. It is a brand we are all familiar with, committed to innovation and technical excellence, whilst sustaining successful UK and international sales in a competitive market. Tyrrells is a top class business in every respect and a worthy winner of this award.”

Peter Mileham, President of the BCC, said: “Every year I am inspired by the level of innovation, competitiveness and talent shown by all our winners both nationally and regionally. It gets harder and harder to win our prestigious winner of winners award for Outstanding Achievement. This year, Tyrrells simply set a standard for every business, whatever their size, to aspire to. Their record as a business and their particular focus on sustainability set them out amongst very strong competition. Congratulations to everyone at Tyrrells and we wish you every success in the future.”

Tyrrells Potato Chips will use the £50,000 to fund research into the growing of its own organic oil seed rape. Tyrrells’ factory uses sunflower oil that is bought in from abroad and they want to produce their own oil from oil seed rape grown on its organic farm in order to further reduce their carbon footprint and reduce costs. This oil will also be used to fuel a generator that will power the factory site. In addition, the money will go towards buying more bird boxes for the rare species of sparrows and young tawny owls that live in Tyrrells’ organic apple orchards. In addition, more trees and hedges will be planted to provide more cover for wildlife around its factory.

The National Winners of the Chamber Awards 2007 were announced at a gala dinner at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London on the 29th November 2007.
